The 2018 HSBC New Zealand Sevens has won the Best International Event award at the New Zealand Events Association (NZEA) Event Awards in Auckland.
The award was shared by New Zealand Rugby (NZR) and event partner 37 South Events and reflects the success of the World Rugby Sevens Series tournament’s first visit to Hamilton.
Since it’s award winning 2018 debut at FMG Stadium Waikato, the HSBC New Zealand Sevens has continued to shine with the 2019 tournament playing to a sell out crowd over Auckland Anniversary Weekend this January.
HSBC New Zealand Sevens General Manager Steve Dunbar said the award recognised the hard work and collaborative efforts of NZR, 37 South Events, H3 and the Hamilton City Council.
“The success of the event has been a product of the cooperation of all parties and the great support of the city of Hamilton and sevens fans, particularly in the Waikato region and from the Fijian community.”
The HSBC New Zealand Sevens will return to FMG Stadium Waikato in 2020 after World Rugby recently awarded NZR a four-year licence extension to host the annual tournament.
37 South Managing Director and event co-promoter Dallas Fisher said the NZEA Award reflected the passion and commitment of Hamilton and the Waikato region’s ability to host great events.
“The local community have backed the event from the start and with a lot of hard work and innovation we are now have an award-winning international event.”
