England Sevens Squad Named for Hertz Sevens

Oxford University student Tom Mitchell has been called into the England Sevens squad for next month's HSBC World Series tournaments in Wellington and Las Vegas.

Mitchell was brought into the England training camp after scoring the final try in Oxford's 28-10 win against Cambridge in the 2011 Varsity Match.

England are fourth in the world series table after three tournaments, just four points behind joint leaders New Zealand and South Africa.

Hertz Secures Naming Rights

Hertz New Zealand has signed a two-year agreement to become the naming rights sponsor of the prestigious New Zealand International Sevens Tournament, effective from 2012.

The inaugural Hertz Sevens event, which is already sold out, will be held at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium on the weekend of 3-4 February 2012. It is part of the annual HSBC Sevens World Series, which has become so popular that rugby sevens has now been accepted as an official Olympic sport, and will debut at the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

IRB confirms pool draw for NZ Sevens

The IRB has confirmed the pool draw for round 4 of the HSBC Sevens World Series, the Hertz Sevens in Wellington on 3-4 February 2012.

The draw was made live on television before the Cup final of the Nelson Mandela Bay South Africa Sevens, the third round of the 2011/12 season, won by New Zealand.

New Zealand have beaten hosts South Africa in dramatic fashion with the final play of the match to win the Nelson Mandela Bay South Africa Sevens, round three of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

The reigning Series champions won a thrilling final 31-26 in front of 30,000 fans to claim the first South Africa Sevens title to be played at a new home in Port Elizabeth.

England Retain Dubai Sevens Crown

England beat France in a fine Cup final 29-12 to defend the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens title they won last year and delight the ex-pat crowd at The Sevens stadium.

In doing so they climb to second in the HSBC Sevens World Series standings, seven points behind Gold Coast champions Fiji. Three nations, New Zealand, France and South Africa, lie three points adrift of England ahead of round 3 in Port Elizabeth next weekend.

Superb Fiji Storm to Gold Coast Sevens Title

Fiji's Sevens stars responded to the hopes and dreams of a nation by beating reigning HSBC Sevens World Series champions New Zealand in the final of the Gold Coast Sevens 26-12 to take an early lead in the new season.
The Fijians travel to Dubai next weekend for round two of the Series with 22 points, three clear of New Zealand and five ahead of third-placed South Africa.

Cheerleaders Get Extra Month

Organisers of the New Zealand International Sevens have extended the deadline for entry videos for the popular cheerleading competition by a month to allow fans who still want to be involved to get their entries in. The extended deadline is Monday 5th December at 5pm. This will allow students who are currently in university exams to leave their dress ups and costumes in the wardrobe until their studies have been completed.

Samoa Claim Ocenia Sevens Title

HSBC Samoa claimed the 2011 Oceania Sevens Championship defeating Fiji 19-7 at a muddy Apia Park.

The two great rivals produced another arm-wrestle that was only settled when captain, and local hero, Uale Mai touched down in the corner in front of a delirious home crowd.

Form favours hosts Samoa at Oceania Sevens

Hometown favourites Samoa have both experience and recent form on their side ahead of the 2011 Oceania Sevens Championship, which kicks off in Apia on Friday.

The fourth edition of the tournament is the qualifying event for regional non-core teams to participate in the fourth and sixth rounds of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Wellington and Hong Kong in 2012, and has drawn almost all of the top teams in the region.

Tickets on Sale Date!

Tickets to summer’s premier event, the New Zealand International Sevens, will go on sale to the general public on Tuesday 4 October at 9am. The tournament will again take place in the first weekend of February (Friday 3 February and Saturday 4 February 2012), at Westpac Stadium, with Waitangi Day following on the Monday, allowing visitors and fans to experience an extended weekend full of excitement in the Capital.

New Zealand Sevens take World Series with one to go

New Zealand Sevens Coach Gordon Tietjens has commended his team after they claimed the HSBC Sevens World Series at the London tournament overnight.

New Zealand’s World Series win was confirmed after they beat Argentina in the quarter final.  New Zealand lost the subsequent semifinal against a strong Fijian side and South Africa defeated Fiji 24 – 14 in the Final at Twickenham.

Tietjens said the team was delighted to have secured their ninth Sevens World Series title.

New Zealand stretch Series lead in Adelaide

 New Zealand won the 2011 International Rugby Sevens Adelaide, the sixth leg of the 2010/11 HSBC Sevens World Series, beating South Africa 28-20 in the Cup final. 

It is their fourth cup win of the season and leaves them on 134 points, 13 ahead of England on 121, with Samoa (100), South Africa (92) and Fiji (90) in third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Sevens Organisers Pay Tribute to NZI

New Zealand International Sevens General Manager, Steve Walters, has expressed his deep gratitude to NZI for their support of the tournament for the past five years as the principal and naming rights sponsor.

The sponsorship agreement comes to an end this year and throughout the five years NZI have been on board, the tournament has gone from strength to strength.

Walters explained, “We have enjoyed great support from all our sponsors and suppliers since the tournament began in 2000, and especially so with NZI.”

Fiji crush NZ in Las Vegas sevens

 New Zealand have been overwhelmed 26-7 by Fiji in their semifinal of the IRB world sevens rugby tournament in Las Vegas.

Coming off the high of their triumph at the Wellington tournament last weekend, Gordon Tietjens' men were shut out by the rampant Fijians who had yet to fire a shot in the world series but were all class today (NZT).  On this form, Fiji - who elminated defending champions Samoa yesterday - will start favourites for the final against South Africa later this morning.

Rain Doesn’t Dampen NZI Sevens

 

Organisers were thrilled with the 2011 NZI Sevens and are praising the tournament as one of the best.

Although the rain set in on day two, crowd spirits were not dampened and overall NZI Sevens fans were well behaved. NZI Sevens General Manager, Steve Walters, said, “The fans this year were fantastic. We are very lucky with the support and energy they bring to the NZI Sevens, making it the unique stop it is on the HSBC Sevens World Series.”
